For anyone hurt in the US
Hurt in an accident? Here’s what to do in the next 7 days.
Three steps, in order. Take care of yourself first. Then learn your deadline. Then, if you want one, choose a lawyer yourself.
Today and tomorrow
Step 1: Get care, and start a simple record
See a doctor even if you feel fine. Some injuries show up days later, and a medical visit also creates a record of what happened.
- Get checked by a doctor or urgent careKeep every visit summary, bill and prescription.
- Keep the report number
- Write down what you rememberDate, time, place, the people involved, witnesses. Take photos of injuries, vehicles and the scene.
- Take your time before you sign anythingIf another person’s insurance company calls, you can ask to talk later, after you’ve had advice.

Step 2: Know your deadline
Every state sets a deadline for filing an injury claim in court. If you miss it, you can lose the right to be paid, even for a strong claim. Some claims, such as those against a city or state agency, can have shorter notice deadlines. Pick your state to see its usual deadline and common exceptions, each linked to the law it comes from. Where we haven’t checked a deadline yet, we say so.
When you’re ready
Step 3: Choose a lawyer, on your terms
Many injury firms offer a free first conversation. Ask each one how its fee works. Talk to more than one if you like. You contact firms directly; we don’t pass your details on.

Who we are
A free guide, not a referral service
Thereby Guide is a free directory from Thereby, a legal technology company that also sells services to law firms. We’re not a law firm or a lawyer referral service, and listing is free whether or not a firm uses Thereby.
This is general information, not legal advice.
How we list firms
We don’t rank firms. Listing is free and doesn’t depend on buying anything.
We list injury law firms in each city in a neutral order, such as A–Z. Every fact shows its source and date. We don’t recommend lawyers.
