Car insurance in Texas

After a crash, these rules decide whose insurance may pay and what you can claim. Ask your insurance company what your own policy has.

  • Minimum insurance a driver must carry

    $30,000 / $60,000 / $25,000

Every driver in Texas must have liability insurance or another approved way to pay for harm they cause1. It must cover at least $30,000 for one person hurt or killed, $60,000 for everyone hurt or killed in one crash, and $25,000 for damage to other people’s property1.

  • Personal injury protection (PIP)

Included unless turned down in writing

A Texas car policy must include personal injury protection, called PIP, unless someone named on the policy turned it down in writing2. PIP pays no matter who was at fault2. The law doesn’t require more than $2,500 in total for each person, so check your policy’s PIP limit2.

  • If the other driver has no insurance, or too little

Included unless turned down in writing

A Texas policy must also include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, unless someone named on the policy turned it down in writing3. It is for when the driver at fault has no insurance, or too little3.
